The script written by rookie screen writer Whit Anderson, was shelved after the project’s producers decided that the story had too many holes in it to be able to resurrect the franchise.

It has been reported that although another screenwriter has been bought in on the project to replace Anderson, the entire reboot could be scrapped.

The show’s star Sarah Michelle Gellar and director Joss Whedon have both been against the idea of producers remaking Buffy – the longest running vampire-based TV series, running from 1997 to 2003.

‘This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths, just because can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself,’ said Whedon, who is currently working on his latest project The Avengers.

Potential backlash from fans of the series, has also been something the producers of the project have been worried about.

‘It’s hard to imagine anybody but Joss bringing that to the screen,’ said writer Marti Noxon, to MTV News, who worked alongside Whedon as a writer on the original series.

“[Joss] said he really wanted to be involved,” Allie said. “So he has been making the time. He is writing the first issue of BUFFY, he’ll be co-writing the other issues, he’ll be editing the scripts. Pretty much the same way he did in Season 8.”

At the end of the day, I’m just excited to write Buffy and where she is in her journey as a character coming off Season 8 where she was running this huge army and it literally was “the world’s going to end.”…She always thought she was going to die, but now she has to answer all of these questions that hit when you normally enter your 20s. Who am I? What am I going to do? Will I be a slayer all of my life? … I’m discovering Buffy as a writer while she is on this path of trying to figure out who she is. Also excited to be writing Spike. He’s definitely a character that I’ve enjoyed.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer premieres in comic book form in September and will reportedly have a 25 book run. Andrew, we wish you monsters!

Given the non-stop deluge of attention she’s received in the past several years, the obsessive fans, and the privacy-invading paparazzi, it was natural to assume that Kristen Stewart would be done with the vampire genre altogether once shooting on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 had wrapped. But apparently Stewart’s still up for more fun and hijinks with the undead if the script (or paycheck) is good enough. Because the mumbly twenty-one-year-old has just signed a three-picture contract to star as the title heroine in Fox’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot movie series. More after the jump.

The initial news that the reboot would occur sans input from Buffy’s creator, beloved genre auteur Joss Whedon, was met with derision by the character’s fans. But Fox boldly moved to counter the potential loss of legions of Buffy loyalists by hiring an actress who will bring with her new armies of admirers. And even Whedon thinks Stewart’s a great choice. In a Fox press release issued today, Whedon remarked, “If Buffy has to wear a new face, I couldn’t imagine a better one than Kristen Stewart’s. I mean, have you SEEN Adventureland? Girl brings the self-pity like no one else. Besides, Scarlett’s busy with Avengers. “

There was talk at one point about perhaps launching a movie without Joss’s involvement.

Marti: That was ridiculous. [Laughs] That was ridiculous. I think that notion was so quickly… I think that was probably some kind of muscle to try to get Joss to commit to something. That was my suspicion, that they were sort of playing a game to move the project forward. Because nobody wants that to happen.
